CASE STUDY. Dense storage split case picking
With industrial land continuing to rise and space being at a premium, companies are looking to maximise the use of their existing space, with dense storage solutions that offer flexible picking options.
Micro-Fulfillment Centres (MFCs) provide a high density and more sustainable solution than traditional warehousing alternatives. Swisslog has installed an AutoStore grid-based automation solution for e-commerce fulfillment specialist, SKUTOPIA, which began with 7,000 bins served by 16 robots, and is now upgrading the system to over 32,000 bins and 65 additional robots to meet growing demand.
The SKUtopia AutoStore solution by Swisslog, is also the first globally to feature an integrated click and collect feature, allowing customers to collect their parcels at any time that suits them, day or night.
Each AutoStore robot is extremely energy efficient, using just 0.1 kW of energy per hour – 6 robots use the same as a toaster! This low energy consumption combined with low maintenance costs makes for a very favourable total cost of ownership (TCO).
AutoStore can also be combined with Swisslog’s ItemPiQ robots to create an AutoPiQ solution. Swisslog’s latest ItemPiQ robot cell is equipped with an intelligent vision system and multifunctional gripper to enable gripping of a wider product range. The cell is based on a human/robot shared picking principle – the robot picks the item it is able to pick, and the worker finishes the order.
